Solid Wood Surfboards
Made from hand picked hard woods, my solid wood surfboards are not for the water. These works of art are the center piece for your coastal home or office. The solid wood boards can be made from exotics and domestic woods including: mahogany, cherry, old growth cypress, heart pine, bubinga, and black walnut. I work with customers and suppliers to choose the woods that fit the decor and situation. Customers are encouraged to be very involved in the process. Most solid wood boards are “classic” designed using the longboard shape and contrasting wood colors and patterns. Boards can be as long as 10 ft. and 24 in. wide. “Rocker” is shaped into the deck and bottom, foiled and the rails are rounded in the classic design. Nose and tail blocks can be added to enhance the appearance. All boards are sealed, glassed, and polished by Master Shaper Tim Nolte. Tim’s been building surfboards and paddleboards for over forty years. His craftsmanship and finish is second to none.
The Process
For longboards, the raw planks must be 10+ ft. long, +4 in. thick and 6 in. (or less) wide. This product is not sold in the local lumberyard. Each plank is hand cut to square all sides. The board pattern is then determined and all planks are planed and joined to exact widths. The planks are glued together with epoxy and clamped. This produces a “table” of adjoined woods. The perimeter surfboard shape is drawn and cut from the “table”. It starts to look like a surfboard. The shaping begins with a hand planer, sander/ grinder and surform. Rocker is shaped, the deck and bottom are foiled, and the rails are shaped. Sanding, sanding, and more sanding is required to remove all surface blemishes. Nose/tail blocks are now built and added. A seal coat is applied prior to glassing. Matte fiberglass is then applied, resin, and a final hot coat of epoxy is applied prior to final sanding and polishing.
The Result
The completed surfboard is truly a finished work of art. My custom built solid wood boards hang in coastal homes on from Outer Banks to Florida. I’ve built boards for a retired Fortune 500 executive, Navy Master Chief, retired Navy Master Diver and many friends. I even built a board for a wedding party, the guests signed the board as a present to the bride and groom.
